Welcome to SMART Core Facility
Leveraging standardized Specific Pathogen-Free (SPF) laboratory animal facilities, advanced micromanipulation equipment, and a specialized technical team, our platform provides biological purification and rapid expansion services. Mouse biological purification involves sperm collection, superovulation, oocyte collection, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and embryo transfer into SPF recipient females to effectively eliminate pathogens such as parasites, bacteria, and viruses, thereby preventing interference from specific pathogens in animal experiments. Rapid expansion relies on IVF technology, requiring only 2–3 male mice to produce over 100 offspring in a single batch. The entire process is completed without natural mating, and offspring birth dates can be controlled within a two-day window. These services are suitable for various research scenarios, including eliminating pathogen contamination, shortening expansion cycles, and overcoming limitations of traditional breeding, ensuring the quality and stability of laboratory animals in research projects.
Our platform is equipped with two Leica M80 stereomicroscopes, four Motic digital stereomicroscopes, four ESCO CO₂ incubators, and six ESCO clean benches, enabling full-process services from oocyte collection and embryo culture to oviduct transfer. All procedures follow standardized operating protocols with strict quality control to ensure that the microbiological status of offspring mice reaches SPF level or higher. We have established two full-process technical capabilities, as listed below (Table 1.1).
Table 1.1 Full-Process Biological Purification and Rapid Expansion Service List
Service Item | Technical Description | Service Advantages | Deliverables |
Mouse Biological Purification | Using IVF and embryo transfer technologies, embryos from the strain to be purified are transferred into SPF surrogate females to eliminate pathogens carried by the original strain, resulting in SPF-grade mice. | 1. Eliminates common pathogens including bacteria, viruses, and parasites; 2. Fully preserves the genetic background of the original strain; 3. Short turnaround time. | SPF-grade mice after purification (both sexes available, ≥3 mice per strain);
|
Mouse Rapid Expansion | Combining superovulation, IVF, and embryo transfer to shorten the mouse reproduction cycle and rapidly expand the population of specific strains. | 1. Increases offspring yield per male per cycle to 3–5 times that of conventional breeding; 2. Enables efficient expansion of inbred, transgenic, and gene-edited strains; 3. Monitors the entire expansion process to ensure strain purity. | Weaned mice delivered in specified quantities (both sexes available, starting from approximately 50 mice per strain, with a single batch capable of exceeding 200 mice); |
To date, our platform has provided technical support for biological purification and rapid expansion to 19 research groups within the institution, delivering 29 strains for mouse biological purification and 16 strains for rapid expansion. For external clients, we have completed 5 technical service projects for biological purification and rapid expansion.
